FYI: The majority of eco products available in health shops and supermarkets in Ireland are currently wholesaled from the UK and Europe. Our online shopping method is more eco friendly as goods will be delivered to you by courier vans using less fuel than the trucks used for wholesale deliveries to shops. Shopping online with us helps you reduce your carbon footprint (less driving to shops, 1ltr fuel = 2.3kg CO2) and saves you money (petrol and diesel pump prices continue to rise - even though they are producing more of the stuff than ever before !?). Savings of up to 40% can be made on current shop prices in Ireland. A Novel Idea for 2012 - Design your own eco hamper as a gift this year with your Eco Homes and Gardens order. We can all evolve to live in an Eco Home and Garden !
What does 'Eco' mean? The word eco comes from the Greek word 'oikos' which means 'home' ... Ecology is knowing the home ... Economy is running the home.
Our Eco TV, Films and Documentaries, Eco Magazine, DIY and Gardening sections offer free education. We work in partnership with businesses to promote products that are healthy for people and planet. Please support the businesses in Eco Directory in their efforts to bring eco products to the mainstream market. Also please support your local charity recycle shops.

Our oceans and rivers are dying, our air is being poisoned, our forests and grasslands are turning to deserts and it seems like few people care. In the 1950s there were 3.5 billion people taking from the Earth. Now this figure is 7 billion and rising. People are consuming even more at a faster rate. There are not enough givers. More and more people are awakening to the need to restore a balance. Is this evolution in consciousness happening quickly enough?
For those of you who are making an effort to live more peacefully with the Earth, have faith. Because it is a spiritual journey we are on. WE are part of something that is necessary in these dark economic times. Return to the land and listen to nature, the great educator. Look after whatever little patch you can and she will look after you in return. Once upon a time there were no books, no universities, no internet. People survived and evolved to where and what we are today. Not all progress is beneficial. The human race needs to slow down and step back from the edge of the cliff. We need to live more consciously and start thinking about the future a little more if there is to be a future for humanity on this planet. Please help restore balance in your daily life. WE are the ones we have been waiting for.
The photo above shows a square foot garden, one of the easiest ways to get your organic garden started. Build a simple raised bed frame and section off 'square feet' with string. Next plant each square foot with a number of plants according to the space each plant requires, from 1 to 16 in number eg. 1 tomato per square foot, 16 radishes per square foot... Easy. You can weed one square foot at a time. After a while you may even call weeding 'therapy' !
The Organic Gardening - Grow Your Own Veg section on the Main Menu has lots of ways to develop your gardening skills, from building a raised bed to composting and making a simple wormery. Tune in regularly as we will be adding lots more gardening tips and designs. You will be amazed how much food you can grow in a little space. Keep a record of the value of the crops you harvest at the end of the year and compare the prices of your crops with what you would pay in shops. It's worth it. Happy Gardening !
