Genetically Modified Foods, Panacea or Poison?Genetic Modification of food is an issue that affects all of humankind and nature. Are these large global corporations slowly changing the genetics of people over generations? Most of these experimental foods have not been properly tested in the human diet to see the long term effects of consuming GM food. This is a crime against humanity. Is there a fear gene now in our food that is stopping the majority of populations from questioning these vertically integrated corporations who now own both food and big pharmaceutical companies? Are they capable of inserting non traceable cancer genes in food that ultimately need their pharmaceuticals to cure? These are some of the questions we as global citizens should be asking to slow down the acceptance, without question, of these rapidly spreading technologies. If we conduct adequate testing that benefits populations and not fast profit motives of corporations we may discover that some of these technologies are beneficial, in time.

Garbage WarriorWhat do beer cans, car tyres and water bottles have in common? Not much unless you're renegade architect Michael Reynolds, in which case they are tools of choice for producing thermal mass and energy-independent housing. For 30 years New Mexico-based Reynolds and his green disciples have devoted their time to advancing the art of "Earthship Biotecture" by building self-sufficient, off-the-grid communities where design and function converge in eco-harmony. However, these experimental structures that defy state standards create conflict between Reynolds and the authorities, who are backed by big business. Frustrated by antiquated legislation, Reynolds lobbies for the right to create a sustainable living test site. While politicians hum and ha, Mother Nature strikes, leaving communities devastated by tsunamis and hurricanes. Reynolds and his crew seize the opportunity to lend their pioneering skills to those who need it most. Shot over three years and in four countries, Garbage Warrior is a timely portrait of a determined visionary, a hero of the 21st century.
Monday February 20thNoam Chomsky - Manufacturing Consent
A documentary film by Noam Chomsky examining news media as business and how it is controlled by the corporate world. Using the propaganda model, Manufacturing Consent posits that corporate owned news, mass communication media, print, radio, television are businesses subject to commercial competition for advertising revenue and profit. As such, their distortion (editorial bias) of news reportage i.e. what types of news, which items, and how they are reported is a consequence of the profit motive that requires establishing a stable, profitable business; therefore, news businesses favoring profit over the public interest succeed, while those favoring reportorial accuracy over profits fail, and are relegated to the margins of their markets (low sales and ratings).

ENDGAMEMonday October 24th: Apocalypto As the foundation of the Mayan civilization begins to crumble, one man's previously idyllic existence is forever changed when he is chosen as a sacrifice needed to appease the gods in director Mel Gibson's mythic, end-times adventure. The Mayan kingdom is at the absolute height of opulence and power, but leaders are convinced that unless more temples are constructed and more human sacrifices made, the crops, and ultimately the people, will suffer. Jaguar Paw (Rudy Youngblood) is a peaceful hunter from a remote forest tribe whose life is about to be changed forever. When Jaguar Paw's village is raided and he is prepared as a sacrifice that the Mayan deities have demanded, the brave young hunter is forced to navigate a horrific new world of fear and oppression. Fearlessly determined to escape his captors and save his family from a harrowing demise, Jaguar Paw prepares to risk it all in one final, desperate attempt to preserve his dying way of life. However, few who have seen the sacrificial alter of the Mayans have managed to live to see another day. Now, in order to rescue his pregnant wife and young son, Jaguar Paw will have to elude the most powerful warriors of the Mayan kingdom while using his vast knowledge of the forest to turn the tables on those who would rather see him dead than set free. Inspired by such ancient Mayan texts as the Popul Vuh, Apocalypto marks a comprehensive collaboration between director Mel Gibson, Cambridge-educated screenwriter Farhad Safinia, and world-renowned archeologist and Mayan culture expert Dr. Richard D. Hansen -- whose services as a special consultant on the film lent the production an unprecedented degree of historical accuracy. APOCALYPTOBless you Mel Gibson. Freedom is The Truth ! Monday October 3rd: The World According to Monsanto (Full Length) There's nothing they are leaving untouched: the mustard, the okra, the bringe oil, the rice, the cauliflower. Once they have established the norm: that seed can be owned as their property, royalties can be collected. We will depend on them for every seed we grow of every crop we grow. If they control seed, they control food, they know it -- it's strategic. It's more powerful than bombs. It's more powerful than guns. This is the best way to control the populations of the world. The story starts in the White House, where Monsanto often got its way by exerting disproportionate influence over policymakers via the "revolving door". One example is Michael Taylor, who worked for Monsanto as an attorney before being appointed as deputy commissioner of the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 1991. While at the FDA, the authority that deals with all US food approvals, Taylor made crucial decisions that led to the approval of GE foods and crops. Then he returned to Monsanto, becoming the company's vice president for public policy. THE WORLD ACCORDING TO MONSANTO
Monday September 26th: The Corporation (Full Length) The Corporation is today's dominant institution, creating great wealth but also great harm. This 26 award-winning documentary examines the nature, evolution, impacts and future of the modern business corporation and the increasing role it plays in society and our everyday lives. THE CORPORATIONMonday September 19th: The Future Of Food There is a food revolution happening globally today. People are seeking out farmers' markets, organic produce and good restaurants. At the same time, our food supply is increasingly controlled by multi-national corporations. Over the past 10 years, with the advent of genetic engineering and the massive expansion of pesticide companies, like Monsanto, into the seed business, the very nature of our food system has radically changed with potentially disastrous effects on our food security. Patenting of life is now permitted, no labeling of genetically modified organisms (GMO's) in food is required, research is conducted on these issues by universities beholden to the "agri-corps" who fund them, and the major regulatory agencies are run by former execs from these very companies. All the while, the average citizens remain blissfully unaware that they are eating GMO food and supporting the aggressive "corporatization' of their food sources. In fascinating and accessible terms, 'The Future of Food' illuminates the major issues ultimately affecting us all -- some surreal, some futuristic, many frightening. Yet, 'The Future of Food' is a hopeful film, featuring insightful and moving interviews with farmers, agriculture and business experts and policymakers. It sees a future in which an informed consumer can join the revolution by demanding natural, healthy food sources that insure environmental integrity. THE FUTURE OF FOOD
Monday September 12th: Oil, Smoke and Mirrors "Oil Smoke & Mirrors" offers a sobering critique of our perceived recent history, of our present global circumstances, and of our shared future in light of imminent, under-reported and mis-represented energy production constraints.Through a series of impressively candid, informed and articulate interviews, this film argues that the bizzare events surrounding the 9/11 attacks, and the equally bizzare prosecution of the so-called "war on terror", can be more credibly understood in the wider context of an imminent and critical divergence between available global oil supply and and global oil demand. The picture "Oil, Smoke & Mirrors" paints is one of a tragically hyper-mediated global-political culture, which, for whatever reason, demonstrably disassociates itself from the values it claims to represent. OIL, SMOKE AND MIRRORS (Full Length)Monday September 5th: The Incredible Human Journey: Out of Africa Broadcast (2010) Dr Alice Roberts travels the globe to discover the incredible story of how humans left Africa to colonise the world - overcoming hostile terrain, extreme weather and other species of human. Monday August 15th: Nanook Of THe North NANOOK OF THE NORTHNanook of the North is regarded as the first significant nonfiction feature, made in the days before the term "documentary" had even been coined. Filmmaker Robert Flaherty had lived among the Eskimos in Canada for many years as a prospector and explorer, and he had shot some footage of them on an informal basis before he decided to make a more formal record of their daily lives. Financing was provided by Revillion Freres, a French fur company with an outpost on the shores of Hudson Bay. Filming took place between August 1920, and August 1921, mostly on the Ungava Peninsula of Hudson Bay. Flaherty employed two recently developed Akeley gyroscope cameras which required minimum lubrication; this allowed him to tilt and pan for certain shots even in cold weather. He also set up equipment to develop and print his footage on location and show it in a makeshift theater to his subjects. Rather than simply record events as they happened, Flaherty staged scenes -- fishing, hunting, building an igloo -- to carry along his narrative. The film's tremendous success confirmed Flaherty's status as a first-rate storyteller and keen observer of man's fragile relationship with the harshest environmental conditions. (In a sadly appropriate footnote, Nanook, the subject of the film, died of starvation not long after the film's release.) Monday August 8th: The Eagle RETURN OF THE ICEWELCOME TO THE FUTUREMonday July 25th: Wamego: Making Movies Anywhere WAMEGO: MAKING MOVIES ANYWHEREFrom the majestic prairie fires of Kansas, through the neon glow of a carnival, to a year-in-the-life journey on making a dream come true, this documentary follows The Balderson Family on their pursuit to prove anyone can make motion pictures anywhere. Monday May 9th: - The End Of Suburbia The End of Suburbia is a 52 minute documentary on Peak Oil and the effects it has on society. Incidentally the world is currently refining more oil than ever before yet the price seems to be going up all the time?! ... More of a product in the marketplace should mean cheaper prices for consumers but the powers that be have figured out a slow price increase model that does not shock the general public into peaceful marching on the streets. It is the same model used to erode social benefits each year. They are increasingly extracting a finite resource and getting as much for the remaining oil as they possibly can. One way to tackle the problem is to use less oil and look for alternative modes of transport. If you have 2 cars why not get rid of one and invest in electric bikes instead? An electric bike is perfect for regular trips to the shop and touring the surrounding countryside at weekends. Typical cost is 1 cent a mile for electricity and cycling is effortless. The kids won't grumble when they are asked to get the messages either as it is a fun form of powered transport. Invest in a horse too maybe if you live in the countryside. Horses and ponies make good lawnmowers too plus they supply an endless supply of organic manure for your garden !
