5 Gallon Wick Container Garden

This is a very efficient and clean container garden system that is useful for urban gardeners. There is a reservoir of water at the bottom of the buckets which means you will only need to water your plant once every couple of weeks. It iis a great way to grow a tomato plant, cucumber or courgette. The following video shows a two bucket wick system. I have also used a single 5 gallon bucket and lid by cutting around the circumference of the lid to fit about 3inches from the inside base of the bucket with a 4inch diameter hole cut in the centre of the lid. Then cut a 5 inch diameter plastic flower pot to 3inches in height and when placed underneath the lid in the centre bottom of the 5 gallon bucket it will act as structural support for the lid and soil mixture above. Total cost for this reusable single bucket garden is about €3 (from which you can grow about €20 of organic veg!). You can use a stanley knife at an angle to cut the 4inch hole in the lid and the inch diameter hole for the water pipe, so you don't need a drill. A hammer and phillips screw driver will punch the holes in the lid for you too.
