Think Global Act Local

When purchasing goods this Christmas whether it be food for your dinner or gifts for your loved ones please 'Think Global and Act Local'. In essence this means 'Buy' local (or as local as you can) and 'Think' about the planet we are passing on to future generations. One survey concluded that a full Christmas dinner may have travelled an astonishing 260,000 miles when every ingredients' carbon footprint is calculated (the circumference of the Earth is 24,900 miles). 50 years ago almost everything eaten for Christmas dinner was sourced locally. We can all make an effort to reduce our carbon footprint at Christmas time.

Read the labels on all products or ask your supermarket manager where the products you are buying originate (this will also help your supermarket manager develop an interest in the Think Global Act Local philosophy). An interesting newspaper article on the subject of Christmas dinner food miles can be viewed here.
